Amazon Kindle

A smattering of my own opinions on a device I neither own nor plan to buy, from a company I greatly respect.

  • Free internet shows the kind of foresight we expect from Amazon. Really the number of bits being streamed to download those books is insignificant and it’d be an insult to charge customers for it when they’re already paying for the books.
  • $10 for a book is a great price. As someone else mentioned this makes it pretty much an impulse buy no-brainer for anyone who can afford this device in the first place.
  • $400 price point is too high. This should be a sub $100 device. The money will be recovered in increased userbase and book spending. But what do I know, I bet their people have financially modeled this thing every which way. Maybe it’s just an early adopter technology for now.
  • At $400 they could have spent a bit more money on design. Honestly this thing looks like it came directly out of the 70’s. What’s up with that? Why can’t we have it look more like the tablets on Star Trek dammit (come on I’m not the only one thinking this)?
  • I am really excited that e-ink technology is finally being embraced and pushed by a big player like Amazon. Can’t wait until we have minority-report style ‘flexible e-paper’ screens that can be folded up and placed in your back pocket.
  • Charging users to upload their own data to the device is a bad idea. I’m pretty sure the interwebs will produce a hack for this real soon though and put Amazon in a tough position with a risk of customer alienation.
