Zone system for digital photography

A tip based on Ansel Adams’ metering system. I haven’t tried this out but it makes intuitive sense to me as a rule of thumb for proper exposure.

Find a dark but fully detailed portion of your scene. This corresponds to Zone 3 (-2EV) on the zone scale. Using your camera’s spot meter on this spot will cause the camera to expose for medium gray (0EV, Zone 5) so we need to go down 2EV to get the correct exposure.
